Glasgow Requiem

Glasgow Requiem reconnects the people of Glasgow and beyond with the city’s medieval origins, founding myths, and lesser-known histories. Centred around Glasgow Cathedral and the Necropolis in Townhead—one of the city’s oldest and most deprived areas—the project combines community archaeology, performance, planting, and creative commissions to build a lasting legacy. A core focus is the long-overlooked St Mungo’s Well, reimagined as a contemporary wellspring—symbolising healing, hope, and renewal. Highlights include a shimmering mosaic within the Well and a community choir concert to rededicate the site—fitting legacies for Glasgow’s 850th anniversary. In the Necropolis, living flower memorials, planted by schoolchildren and volunteers, honour those in unmarked graves, transforming neglected ground into biodiverse spaces of remembrance. By revealing hidden heritage and involving historically excluded communities, Glasgow Requiem fosters cultural regeneration, placemaking, and pride. Its legacy includes public artworks, ecological renewal, and a renewed sense of shared history and belonging.
