Great Yarmouth and the Gloucester shipwreck, 1682
Tragically lost in 1682 off Great Yarmouth, the Gloucester warship’s story is best understood in connection to the town and its people, yet this incredible heritage has yet to be explored by local communities. In partnership with Time & Tide Museum of Great Yarmouth Life, UEA’s award-winning maritime historians Professor Claire Jowitt and Dr Benjamin Redding will work with local communities to recover the town’s central role in the story of the Gloucester and broader seventeenth-century history. Through a suite of guided/self-guided maritime-history themed walks tailored for children and adults, we will cultivate public involvement, civic pride, and provide an innovative heritage experience attractive to locals and visitors alike. By combining cutting-edge digital technology with storytelling, we will create the town’s first augmented reality (AR) heritage walk. The walk will connect the town’s present to its past through AR, enabling participants to experience lost dimensions of its rich maritime heritage.
