Greekscapes: Recording the Hellenic Heritage of London

Greeks communities have a history in London that spans from 15th century to the modern day. Our project aims to record the tangible and intangible Heritage of the Ethnic Greek communities in London. The term Ethnic Greeks includes communities that identified as Greek origin, irrespectively if they are coming from Greece, Cyprus, or other places of the Greek diaspora. Greekscapes will employ Urban Landscape Archaeology following the principles developed by the NLFH Layers of London Project, building recording methods, oral history recording, archival research, and material culture studies, to identify how Greeks have shaped modern London and have been influenced by the capital's urbanscapes. Working in partnership with the Society for Modern Greek Studies and the Rebetiko Carnival charity we aim to make the most comprehensive recording of the heritage of a diasporic community in London, and to preserve this for the future generations.
