Harjas: the conservation of divine Sikh musical heritage

Sangat Trust will safeguard and share the heritage of divine Sikh music in the UK. Through training in oral history documentation, instrument conservation, and public engagement, we will ensure that this unique heritage - rooted in oral traditions, sacred instruments, and community practice - is preserved for future generations. The project will train 20 volunteers in oral history and rare instrument repair, conserve at least 10 historic Sikh instruments, examine at least 50 additional Sikh instruments, and capture 10 oral histories from elders and practitioners. Additional outputs include a digital microsite, public recitals, live podcasts, an immersive sound booth, and a sustainably-produced stage set. This project will not only save the heritage, but also empower community members with heritage skills, thus raising the standard in conservation approaches and laying the foundations for Sangat Trust’s Heritage Ambassadors Programme (a network of heritage practitioners, enthusiasts and conservationists working with Sikh heritage space).
