Hidden in Plain Sight: Exploring & Reimagining Brighton's Colonial Heritage

We hope to achieve skill enhancement for a new and diverse cohort of heritage knowledge producers and curators, with a legacy of enhanced sense of place, belonging and self-esteem for participants. This will be attained through employing innovative outreach methodologies to explore the presence and significance of colonial legacies in Brighton’s built environment and the inextricably links to the marginalisation of black history and black narratives. Firmly aligned to the heritage and equity agenda, the project actively targets these underrepresented groups whose perspectives have been neglected. The integral community engagement component is strategically devised to now centre these narratives - addressing a gap in cultural provision through participatory knowledge production and dissemination. The project directly responds to the findings of extensive community consultations and action research. It comprises heritage training, experiential workshops and co-designed exhibitions, installations and publications facilitating authentic reflections of the realities and sensibilities of the target communities.
