Barking & Dagenham – A Place to be Proud of will strengthen the Council’s capacity to work meaningfully with local communities and heritage stakeholders, developing an embedded Culture and Heritage Action Plan informed by their insight and contributions to realise a shared vision, building on our Culture and Heritage Strategy 2025-2030. As part of this process, we will audit the borough’s physical, natural and intangible heritage assets, mapping where heritage can drive pride, participation and place-based renewal. The project will trial new approaches to widening access, developing infrastructures that enable genuine community agency and ownership through a shared enterprise model rooted in local identity. Using an asset-based, ground-up commissioning approach, it will establish the conditions for a sustainable model of community-led stewardship. The legacy will be a resilient local ecosystem where heritage is co-produced, understood and equitably valued — informing future strategies and investment.
