Ìgbéyàwó Manchester: Youth-Led Yorùbá Wedding Heritage

Manchester Youth Empowerment Club (MYEC) will safeguard and share the living heritage of Ìgbéyàwó (Yorùbá marriage customs) with and for Greater Manchester communities. Through youth-led oral histories, 8 co-created workshops, a captioned short film and 20+ bilingual object cards, we will record elders’ knowledge (gifts, songs/òríkì, rites, roles) and make it accessible at free events and online. The project will build skills for young people, research, interviewing, translation, media and event production while strengthening intergenerational pride, belonging and wellbeing. We will remove barriers with travel support, step-free venues and inclusive formats, then deposit all materials with a local archive for long-term public benefit. Our approach is low-carbon (digital-first, recycled print) and capacity-building, leaving MYEC with trained volunteers, partners and resources to continue heritage activity beyond the grant.
