Kalemouth Suspension Bridge - Refurbishment

Kalemouth Suspension Bridge, constructed around 1835, is a rare example of early engineering innovation. The main aim of the project is to restore this valued historical asset to ensure it is in a safe working condition and can continue to be enjoyed by regular users and visitors alike. The proposed project involves replacing all timber elements forming the bridge deck and parapets, thereby safeguarding it and allowing pedestrians and cyclists to continue to use the bridge whilst avoiding the possibility of a full bridge closure. A conservation approach to design will be adopted, meaning that original features including ironwork and stonework will be preserved. The intention is to support the essential physical repair works with community engagement events, training and skills development to help create a lasting legacy from the refurbishment. This is with a view to increase awareness of the bridge’s historic significance and encourage visitors to the area.
