Kempton: Clean Water for Life - reaching a wider audience

This project will increase the sustainability and resilience of Kempton Steam Museum. It will build higher engagement with visitors and local communities while enhancing support for volunteers and care of collections. Three new staff roles will be created to focus on volunteering, collections and project delivery. Volunteer systems will be set up and recruitment developed to improve retention, increase numbers and attract diverse volunteers as visitor numbers increase. In addition to the world’s largest working stationary steam engine, our collection comprises approximately 1,000 technical drawings and 2,000 objects. To achieve Accreditation by 2026 we must improve documentation procedures. Hounslow is an ethnically diverse borough, but not reflected in our visitors. An audience development strategy will guide our engagement with underserved local communities and increase visitor numbers. As an ideal location to support STEM subjects and local history, we will increase school visits through the introduction of new digital learning resources.
