Nature And Landscape

Knaresborough Forest, Nature and Community

The story of the Royal Knaresborough Forest as hunting domain for Medieval Kings is well known. Much less is known about the story of the foresters who lived under strict Forest Law and eked out a living there. In this project, Knaresborough Museum Association (KMA) aims to tell the forgotten story of the foresters and explore what remains of the forest today in a unique and immersive exhibition, which will be held at Knaresborough Heritage Centre. Much of the fauna and flora within our local ancient woodland are rare or endangered, and face a number of challenges and risks into the future. This project aims to engage with the local community, particularly young people, photographers and sound recordists in exploring and recreating through photography, sound, art and sculpture what is special about our local, historically significant and ecologically diverse woodland, and how we can protect it.
