Culture And Memory

Legacy of Notting Hill Carnival

A multi-medium exhibition, digital zine and archival project capturing and showcasing the birth and continued legacy of Notting Hill Carnival; celebrating 60 years of its iconic history. During the curation phase, we will conduct 1-to-1 interviews with relevant carnival figures, as well as 3 group community co-curation sessions. Using these insights, in conjunction with our own research and ideas, we will solidify the exact scope, structure, layout and focuses of the final outputs. At this stage, we will also create oral histories, with accompanying photoshoots, of the Carnival Legends and Community Figures, to be archived by The Museum of Youth Culture. The 9-day exhibition will take place at Somerset House, featuring a mixture of archival and contemporary photos, films, oral histories and text. The digital zine will encompass a 3D scan of the exhibition, an essay using the exhibition text, as well as the oral histories and photos we create.
