Culture And Memory
Let’s Go Fly ‘The Kite’ will engage our community in rediscovering, sharing, and celebrating a story of Cambridge in which those who have been socio-economically marginalised can identify. We will surface the heritage of ‘The Kite’, a traditionally working class neighbourhood which nurtured the international cooperative movement, the women's rights movement, and an active citizenry which declared itself an autonomous city in the 1970’s. This heritage is at risk given an ageing population and major changes due to the development of a Life Sciences hub. People who live and work in the Kite and whose families have been affected by previous redevelopments will be trained to collect and share oral histories, a digital archive and an interactive exhibition will also collect the stories of new residents and visitors. We aim to help a narrative of inclusion and people power emerge in a city healing from centuries of division.
