#MAR Leading Lights: charting a course for the future of maritime heritage

The Leading Lights project will invest in historic vessels UK-wide, making the sector more resilient, connected and informed. It will impact a broad range of people, from vessel custodians to professionals, training organisations and funding bodies, as well as NHS-UK. It will create a lasting legacy, giving NHS-UK increased capacity to lead and support the sector over the next 20 years. Heritage will be revitalised and better managed with targeted initiatives including grants, guidance and specialist training. This will lead to a reduction in vessels at risk, with the sector better connected through strengthened regional ties. New opportunities to engage with hard-to-reach audiences will diversify the volunteer workforce and a higher level of technical expertise will be provided through a Monitors & Mentors Agency (MMA). The National Historic Fleet will more accurately reflect the UK’s most significant vessels following a Registers Review, giving clear guidance on future conservation and funding priorities.
