Culture And Memory

Market Stories

Studio KIND is a community cultural space within the newly restored (£2.5 million) Victorian Pannier Market in the heart of Barnstaple, where we run community activities and put on exhibitions, events and wellbeing projects. We would like to help our community explore the heritage of the market building via selected historical events that are relevant today. We will offer 3 commissions reaching a new and more diverse cross section of our community; increasing understanding of the historical role of the market and the implications for its use today. We will disseminate the work via digital media, display boards, a physical exhibition and a programme of events, workshops and activities for all ages. We have an on-going relationship with 7 local secondary schools, and many more local primary schools, who we would like to involve in the project, working directly with the artist-researchers to encourage engagement from young people.
