Culture And Memory

Memories of the World Wars

Through the Memories of the World Wars project, Wem Civic Society will preserve and share the stories of local individuals who lived through the First and Second World Wars. By collecting oral histories and researching written records, we aim to build a digital archive that deepens understanding of how conflict shaped our community. Written records are as vulnerable as oral memories. Some have been lost through war; others lie forgotten in archives or digital files. We will retrieve, reinterpret, and re-present these materials for younger and future generations. Volunteers, including researchers and oral historians, will ensure a wide range of perspectives are recorded. We will also work with local partners, such as Shropshire Archives, to ensure long-term preservation and access. The project will produce a free website and archive, supported by educational resources and events. It will offer a lasting legacy, inspire learning, reflection, and pride in Wem’s wartime heritage.
