MUTTON: Young People Reclaiming Local Heritage
MUTTON is a project, including: -MUTTON: a piece of theatre telling the story of Mary Bateman, exploring parallels between poverty in the 1800s and today. -Young Company: creative research and performance project co-led by young people (YP) at risk of becoming NEET, exploring untold stories of individuals from communities they belong to. -Community Storytelling: workshops and events for adults, sharing local heritage through storytelling. MUTTON will contribute to more inclusive, representative understanding of Leeds’ heritage - centred on the complexity, creativity, and resilience of communities often left out of traditional histories. The project will empower YP to explore cultural and social histories through creative research and performance. Developing skills in communication, research, and performance; building confidence and a deeper connection to heritage. The MUTTON legacy: 1 x play toured to disadvantaged communities 3 x youth-led performances 2 x storytelling performances by adults A creative online archive of untold stories
