New Sisterhood
New Sisterhood is a research-based poetry & performance project between Teesside Archives & Tees Women Poets that aims to engage women in Teesside to research, write, and perform poetic work telling the history of women’s rights activism in Teesside and reflecting on how issues have (or haven’t) changed since the disbanding in 1996 of the Cleveland County Council and its trailblazing Equal Opportunities Unit. It will preserve, and be inspired by, first-hand source documents at risk of loss, in particular copies of Sisterhood zine which began production in 1980s. Made by women, for women, and intersectional in its reach, the zine connected women’s groups across the region from the Cleveland Women’s Centre, a hub of counter-culture no longer in existence. We aim to connect women and organisations around this shared history.
