Culture And Memory
Newham Heritage Month (NHM) is a programme of events and activities celebrating the heritage of the London Borough of Newham. We run a community grant programme for local organisations and individuals who propose projects that respond to a particular theme, which in 2025 will be Newham At 60: A Borough Like No Other. Grantees go on capacity building journeys including training and specialist support before undertaking outreach and research on their chosen topic. They then interpret and share their research through exhibitions, screenings, performances, guided tours and workshops that contribute to a month-long celebration in September. With an emphasis on contemporary collecting, the projects provide new material for the borough archive and NHM website. The Story Collectors project, and project partners including UCL and Creative Newham, provide additional education and training in heritage skills for residents. The learning from NHM2025 will inform future programming at the forthcoming Newham Heritage Centre.
