Culture And Memory
We will build on increasing interest in community heritage by involving people from all walks of life and generations to help reveal and share the vibrant history of North End, once the main thoroughfare into Wirksworth from the north. This single street is a microcosm of the social history, industry and geology of the whole of Wirksworth. It combines working class cottages, middle class large houses, gentry’s villas and farms with coaching inns, shops, trades, crafts, workshops, a police station, mills, schools and cemeteries. We will celebrate all the people who have lived, worked, schooled and been buried there by involving and training school pupils, residents and volunteers in a programme of research, oral history, publication, talks and walks, exhibitions, school activities, performance and Celebrate North End Heritage Weekend.
