Culture And Memory
In 2025 it will be 800 years since a small village made up of simple huts (shiels) was founded on the north bank of the River Tyne where the Fish Quay stands today. Created originally as a small fishing port to serve Tynemouth Priory, this grew into the thriving harbour town of North Shields. The upcoming 800th anniversary year provides an opportunity to share and celebrate the town’s rich heritage through a programme of activities, events, exhibitions and performances so community members of all backgrounds, ages and ethnicities can celebrate North Shields past, present and future. With our partners, we want this project to:•Help North Shields people learn about their town’s remarkable history, places, people and stories.• Increase the community’s heritage knowledge base ensuring important local heritage, may be shared, saved and passed on. •Involve organisations/individuals in developing new resources, providing a valuable legacy for present and future generations.
