Our Hidden River: The Story of the Westbourne

The River Westbourne originates in Hampstead Heath, flowing south through Paddington and Knightsbridge before joining the River Thames near Chelsea Bridge. Historically, the Westbourne provided drinking water for Londoners and fed spas, fishponds, and ornamental lakes, including the Serpentine Lake in Hyde Park. About 170 years ago, like many of the lost rivers, it was forced underground as London expanded, becoming part of the city’s urban drainage and sewer system. With the support of key heritage organisations, we aim to engage community and primary school groups and residents in exploring and sharing the heritage of the River Westbourne, uncovering what London was like when the river ran above ground. We will achieve this through guided walks, research sessions, art workshops, heritage visits, and environmental action. At the project’s conclusion, we plan to create a leaflet, walking trails, digital resources, community artworks, and a podcast series, informed by participants.
