Culture And Memory
Our inter-generational project will collect the oral histories of families with a learning disability. Royal Mencap Society was established by parents who wanted more for their children. Their stories are hugely under-represented in the histories of parenting. We will collect stories from parents of children and adults with a learning disability, and parents who themselves have a learning disability across Wales. As we celebrate our 80th anniversary next year, it is the perfect timing for us to anchor and preserve this important part of social history. By collating a collection of 50 stories from the parents with lived experiences, we can ensure these parents feel heard, valued and recognised, whilst simultaneously exposing to the wider community the realities faced by families who have long been overlooked. This archive of voices will serve as a powerful resource for education, advocacy and connection, bridging gaps between individuals, communities and generations.
