Culture And Memory
Through Timeless Ties: Preserving and Passing on the African Textile Heritage, we aim to preserve and pass on the endangered art of traditional African tie and dye, ensuring its cultural significance is understood and appreciated by younger generations in the UK. Our goal is to engage young people from diverse backgrounds through hands-on heritage workshops, storytelling, and cultural education led by a master artisan. The project will also produce a short documentary filmed in Abeokuta, Ogun State, Nigeria, capturing the traditional methods and cultural meanings behind the craft, alongside a digital archive of participant work and reflections. These outputs will be donated to Medway Archives for long-term preservation. In doing so, we hope to strengthen cultural pride, increase access to underrepresented heritage, and empower young people to become future custodians of intangible cultural knowledge
