Culture And Memory
Through the “Out of the Margins” project, we aim to increase access to and engagement with queer heritage for older adults. We want to ensure that stories and voices that have historically been marginalised are better understood, valued and celebrated. By working with content from the Special Collection at Birmingham’s Cadbury Research Library, we will highlight 150 years of queer artistry and make this material accessible in innovative, creative and inclusive ways. Our aim is not only to preserve and interpret heritage, but also to create opportunities for older people to connect with it meaningfully. By responding through our own poetry and creative writing, participants will build confidence, skills and a sense of ownership of these histories. The project will result in new written work that places contemporary voices alongside archival materials, increasing awareness and visibility of queer heritage, whilst strengthening understanding of its cultural importance.
