Preserving the Heritage of Igbabonelimhin Dance: A Cultural legacy for future generations

Through the Preserving the Heritage of Igbabonelimhin Dance project, we aim to safeguard and celebrate the rich cultural legacy of the Esan people of Nigeria. This traditional dance, renowned for its vibrant rhythms and intricate movements, is at risk of being lost due to modernisation and a lack of intergenerational knowledge transfer. Our project will document the history, techniques, and cultural significance of the Igbabonelimhin Dance through oral histories and digital archiving. We will organise interactive workshops to teach young people the dance, ensuring its survival for future generations. A community performance festival will bring the tradition to life, fostering pride and connection within the Esan community. By blending traditional practices with modern technology, we will create an enduring digital archive and inspire a renewed appreciation for this cultural treasure, empowering the community to celebrate and preserve its heritage for years to come.
