Project Safe Haven (PSH), Phase2: securing HMS Unicorn within Dundee's repaired East Graving Dock.

Project Safe Haven describes the multi-phased MasterPlan to permanently relocate 200-year-old HMS Unicorn into dry dock for sustainable long-term preservation. Phase1 (emergency hull strengthening and other enabling work) is underway, completing Spring’25; parallel core capacity building is ongoing. Phase2’s objective is to make the currently derelict B-Listed East Graving Dock structurally sound, to receive the Ship (floating) above a supporting cradle. Phase3 (not part of this application) will see Unicorn dry-docked, major preservation works commence, and a shoreside facility built to optimise access for all, and care for her collections. Through PSH, Unicorn will become a dynamic hub of maritime conservation, and will ultimately offer a world-class visitor experience commensurate with HMS Unicorn’s international importance. Outreach and activities throughout will ensure lasting social impact, and in Phase2 we will launch a learning programme that showcases the Ship’s unique conservation challenges, developing and sharing specialist and transferrable knowledge and skills.
