Culture And Memory
The Purani Yaadein 2 project will preserve and share the lived, oral, and intangible cultural heritage of Leeds’s Pakistani/Kashmiri communities, particularly those whose families settled in the region following the Partition of India and Pakistan in 1947. Their experiences, traditions, and memories form a vital but under-represented part of Britain’s collective story We will train young people to act as community reporters, engaging and gathering the testimony and artefacts from those who were there as well as their children/grandchildren. Our intergenerational project will bring people together to share and learn about this important heritage. The project will share this research through workshops/exhibition events, for the 80th anniversary of the partition 2027 and Leeds’ celebrations for its 400th anniversary this year. With a new digital archive and schools resources we will leave a lasting legacy for the people of Leeds as well as contributing to national narratives about postcolonial our story.
