Nature And Landscape
Our aim is to raise the profile of the Melton Navigation through active engagement of the local community and explore how we can progress restoration of the waterways heritage infrastructure. We want to grow support for preserving our built environment. Using material from new research and interviews with canal experts, we will conduct guided walks and give talks, to connect with our local community to promote navigation heritage such as the Melton canal basin environs and the site of former warehousing; the canal cuttings of the River Eye in New Park and Egerton Park; the Victorian road bridge spanning the canal; the formerly canalised river; and the 11 locks between Melton Mowbray and the Leicester section of the Grand Union Canal. We also plan to clear one nearby lock of weeds, debris and overgrowth.
