Culture And Memory
Since 2012 We, Red Lotus Events (RLE) have connected Gujarati Diaspora communities in Brent to their heritage, mainly via cultural experiences/events. We now urgently want to capitalise on our reach/connections to start recording, documenting and archiving at-risk intangible cultural practices and heritage we celebrate. We will deliver a 2-year outreach programme involving 150+ Brent volunteers & participants. Focus on most at-risk heritage: *Oral Histories – of 1st generation Brent migrants, including Diu Daman (oft-ignored sub-community) *Oral Traditions (music, song, stories) *Gujarati Folk Dance (oral descriptions of heritage/history, terminology & cultural meaning of the dances) AIM: to emerge with learning resources, digital outputs and inclusive, re-usable installations to share, wide community importance (future generations, heritage experts, Gujarati & non-Gujaratis alike). Brent Museums to accession/archive materials uncovered/created. OUTCOME: we will better preserve the memories and intangible heritage that are fading from knowledge amongst 3rd, 4th & 5th generation UK Gujarati’s.
