Rangila: South Asian Queerness and The Black Country (1980-2025)

Rangila: South Asian Queerness and The Black Country (1980-2025) will document the untold stories of individuals at the intersection of South Asian and LGBTQ+ communities. Despite increased visibility and acceptance over this period, continuing pressures mean that stories remain unshared. As a South Asian LGBTQ+-led organisation, Jaivant Patel Company (JPCo) aims to provide visibility and representation for South Asian LGBTQ+ communities today and to increase understanding of the complexity of their experience. The lived experience of the Artistic Director and Research Consultant underpins Rangila. We will: interview 10 individuals in depth; collect vox pops from 10; launch with an event for 100; share a 30-minute documentary with 10 groups reaching 200; present 3 podcasts exploring specific themes reaching 900; deposit the primary resources with Birmingham Museums Trust. Rangila is the next project in JPCo’s ongoing programme to document the history of South Asian communities in the Black Country – Virasat.
