Rekindling Nello James: Cultivating Caribbean Culture with Stories of Home

Rekindle Supplementary School wants to create a project that engages young people and wider community members in intergenerational story-gathering and sharing, that can be digitally archived to preserve and protect the cultural memories and practices of those from the Caribbean diaspora. Focusing on community activism influenced by CLR James’ teachings, ‘Rekindling Nello James’ aims to reignite a sense of belonging for the young descendants of Windrush and celebrate what it means to have and cherish Caribbean heritage in south Manchester. Legacy is essential for intangible heritage. CLR James left behind a legacy of work that counters many existing narratives regarding what it means to be Caribbean - socialist, sustainable, literary and political. We want to harness these attributes, memories and culture and galvanise them into contributions to the counternarrative of being Caribbean in Britain.
