Remembering and Commemorating the April 1826 Lancashire Weavers Uprising

This project will enhance collective remembrance of the April 1826 Lancashire weavers uprising and Chatterton massacre (26th April, 1826). Registered charity the Weavers Uprising Bicentennial Committee [WUBC] will work closely with several local heritage sites in Pennine Lancashire, developing existing synergies to create a set of co-ordinated commemorative events throughout 2026. Planned and delivered over an 18 to 24 month period, these bicentennial activities will draw upon the expertise of the WUBC and its partners to widen access, participation, and sense of connectedness among the local community. Prior to formation of the WUBC in 2021 no organised annual commemorations occurred: in public memory the uprising had been either forgotten, ignored or misinterpreted. As a legacy, the WUBC networked activities will create new commemorative artifacts and digital outputs; generate renewed interest in the 1826 events; and produce sufficient momentum to ensure the heritage is remembered and commemorated for years to come.
