Through this project, The Apsley Paper Trail aims to secure the long-term survival of Frogmore Paper Mill — the world’s oldest mechanised paper mill and birthplace of modern papermaking. The project will enable the Mill to become safe, watertight and resilient against weather conditions so it can once again welcome visitors, volunteers and learners to experience a working industrial heritage site of national significance. Urgent stabilisation and roof repairs will prevent catastrophic loss, protect historic machinery and collections, and create a solid foundation for future conservation and redevelopment. By saving this irreplaceable heritage, we will revitalise Frogmore’s role as a centre for education, skills training, sustainability and community pride. The project is the first step in re-establishing Frogmore as the UK’s leading paper heritage site — a living museum celebrating innovation, craft and the cultural revolution paper inspired.
