Safeguarding heritage at the Lancashire Mining Museum
The Lancashire Mining Museum has managed the former Astley Green Colliery since 1982 presenting an authentic view of coalmining history to diverse audiences by preserving and interpretating historic objects, buildings, landscapes and personal testimony. This project is a first step in a wider process to transform the museum, preserve the site’s ‘at risk’ heritage, developing our visitor offer, engaging with audiences, and increasing the resilience of the governance team and volunteers. This project develops the museum, its offer and its organisation under the overarching theme of safeguarding mining heritage:. There are three priorities: Protecting our heritage, tackling our two major ‘at risk’ structures Connecting audiences to heritage through an engagement strategy working with stakeholders to make heritage relevant by improving interpretation creating a heritage trail to link existing and new attractions to the Bridgewater Canal and our woodland. Improving our organisation’s skills, expanding our ability to manage and develop heritage.
