Safeguarding Iconic Forth Seabird Islands in Partnership

Bass Rock and Craigleith in the Firth of Forth are among the UK’s most ecologically significant seabird islands. Amid growing environmental threats, they remain vital havens supporting globally important seabird populations, including Puffins and Northern Gannets, and are Scotland’s most visible and accessible seabird sites. RSPB has been offered a rare opportunity to assume stewardship of Craigleith and Bass Rock, securing their future as protected nature reserves. This purchase is subject to a separate NHMF application. Once acquired, and in partnership with the Scottish Seabird Centre, we will support seabird recovery through targeted conservation management, vital monitoring and research, and catalyse policy change to address the root causes of their decline. At the same time, we will deepen the public’s connection to the islands and ensure the local community remains an active and valued part of their future - safeguarding these extraordinary places for generations to come.
