Nature And Landscape
Cornwall’s coastal clifftops support a unique assemblage of twelve nationally rare spiders, some of which are found nowhere else in the UK. Save our Spiders: Kernow (SoS) will promote the long-term survival of these threatened spider species in the UK by improving our knowledge of their UK distribution and habitat requirements; restoring 15 hectares (ha) of clifftop grassland habitat into favourable condition; and providing landowners with appropriate habitat management guidance. Although focused on the Cornish coast, the project will support national populations with survey data and habitat management guidance made freely available. An accompanying programme of events will address negative perceptions of spiders while providing opportunities for communities to get active outdoors, reconnect with wildlife and develop skills to get involved in invertebrate recording and practical conservation action. A series of podcasts and an accompanying social media campaign will spread positive spider messaging to audiences across the UK.
