The 1897 tiller steered stack barge, DAWN, is embarking on a new adventure as her 130th anniversary approaches. The New Horizon Community Hub will be a pilot project, through which DAWN will visit four ports on the Essex coast, spending a week in each port every month. DAWN will offer a welcoming and safe hub for a variety of community groups with health, wellbeing and educational services accessible throughout the year including during the depth of winter when days are short and dark. The project will be run in partnership with MNE Essex MIND. Data for the Pilot will be collected and analysed by the University of Essex to inform future delivery. The project is based on results from research carried out in 2024, funded through a Resilient Heritage grant. This research investigated the need and demand for the wellbeing service, and established the partnerships for delivery.
