Whitby is awash with seafaring history. Ships have set sail from our shores for centuries, and our striking coastline and the ocean that laps it hold an abundance of extraordinary marine biodiversity - including the majestic lobster who can live for up to 100 years. Yet our rich maritime past and sea life, are at risk of being forgotten and diminished. “Sea Story” is a journey through the generations. It will explore the local heritage of our seafaring town, capturing, curating, and sharing oral histories to deepen connections to Whitby’s fascinating fishing past and inspire action to safeguard our seas. Through intergenerational storytelling, interactive educational resources for young learners, and inclusive, community events that spark curiosity, “Sea Story” will capture the memories of local residents to build a living archive of knowledge and pride - a shared story ensuring Whitby’s heritage is celebrated and preserved for generations to come.
