Nature And Landscape
The Eastern Lowlands Red Squirrel Group (ELRSG) aims to deliver a vital two-year phase (2026–2028) of a wider five-year regional programme to secure the long-term survival of red squirrels across Fife, Kinross-shire, and Clackmannanshire. This phase will focus on tackling the twin threats of grey squirrel dominance and the spread of squirrelpox virus, while strengthening and expanding local volunteer groups to build long-term community capacity. Using a strategic rolling clearance approach, reinforced by disease monitoring and habitat improvements, we will reduce invasive pressures and create conditions for red squirrels to recover and thrive. Funding from the Heritage Fund will bridge support from private funders and enable delivery to begin at scale, ensuring momentum is not lost after the current NRF funded development phase ends in March 2026. The legacy will empower local groups, stronger partnerships, and be a clear pathway to complete the full five-year programme, securing lasting biodiversity benefits.
