Shame Parade: Exploring Charivari Heritage

We will undertake research with Historic Environment Scotland (HES), Museums & Galleries Edinburgh (MGE) and Warburg Institute, to explore the history of ‘charivari’ and shaming practices in Scotland. We will explore interrelated histories of medieval cross-dressing used to shame people, along with the more recent history of drag in LGBT pride. The findings will inspire the creation of a new film and artworks, by creative producer Angel Cohn Castle and artist Davide Bugarin, forming the core of a touring exhibition. Historical objects and interpretive materials will be featured, connecting audiences to the rich and complex history of charivari and the differing approaches to cross-dressing in history and now. We’ll engage audiences from diverse backgrounds in this unique history, providing multiple entry points into these stories. To further engage communities, the Travelling Gallery and LGBT Youth Scotland will deliver workshops across Scotland, exploring the themes charivari through activities such as costume-making.
