Sharing Our Heritage Through Engineering Innovation
Llangollen Railway Trust aims to showcase a pioneering, practical approach to reducing the carbon impact of steam operation while opening up a previously hidden part of our heritage to the public. Through this project we will install an electric boiler pre-heater and improved draughting system, significantly cutting coal use, emissions and operational pressures on our locomotives. Alongside the engineering work, we will create safe public access to the Motive Power Depot and develop bilingual interpretation that tells the story of our locomotives, our environmental innovation and the skilled volunteers who maintain them. A new Outreach and Learning role will enable us to engage schools, colleges and community groups, using the project as a catalyst for STEAM learning and wider participation. Overall, the project aims to protect vital heritage, respond to climate challenges, inspire new audiences, and strengthen the long-term sustainability of steam operations at Llangollen & Corwen Railway.
