Sharing Sister Dora

We would like to elevate, celebrate and secure the story of Sister Dora (1832-1878) an extraordinary, pioneering nurse whose biography brings together themes of industry, medicine and women’s emancipation. Once an iconic figure in Walsall’s history, her profile has declined markedly in the last 40 years. We will bring Sister Dora’s story into the 21st Century by: digitising archive materials; producing an illustrated biography (for Key Stage 2); recording an audiobook; creating museum display materials; sharing teacher resources and training. Boosted by a high profile public launch, these resources will be shared with the public online and through heritage partners. Every primary school in Walsall will receive all the support they need to adopt the teaching of Sister Dora’s story as part of their KS2 curriculum, including a class set of the biography. Our legacy ambition is that everyone growing up in Walsall will know Sister Dora’s story.
