Sharks Connect the Thames

This project will connect young people in Essex to their natural heritage and upskill them in science and conservation, by working together with conservation professionals to fill key knowledge gaps for threatened species, leaving the natural heritage of the Greater Thames Estuary (GTE) in a better condition. Using a suite of activities leveraging charismatic sharks and ray species within the GTE, we will engage, connect and upskill local communities and young people with the biology, conservation, and restoration of their local natural heritage. Objectives: 1. Reveal and characterise the ecology and habitat use of apex predators in the GTE 2. Increase nature connectedness of communities across Essex to their local natural heritage 3. Upskill local young people in science and conservation to support transitions to higher education and blue professions 4. Improve the management of the GTE’s natural heritage through science-based, community-generated conservation action
