Nature And Landscape

Sherwood's No Longer Forgotten Lowland Heathlands

Our project vision is to bring about the longer term survival of the heritage flora and fauna species on 125 hectares of lowland heathland habitats across Sherwood Forest, and to make these sites much more accessible for people. In respect of biodiversity survival, heathlands are an integral part of the Sherwood landscape, but they are a precious habitat that is fast disappearing. We need to do all we can to protect and improve what remains. This includes both the restoration of existing heathlands and the creation of new ones that provide for: • The purple glow of bell heather and ling, pale blue harebells. • Green tiger beetles and longhorn beetles…. • The churr of the nightjar and the gleam of glow-worms at dusk… • A lizard scuttling through the bracken… • A welcoming green space that helps capture carbon to combat global warming and recharging a dwindling water source.
