Sounds of Home: Preserving Migrant Musical Heritage in Manchester

This project will celebrate and safeguard the heritage of 15 folk instruments and the migrant and refugee musicians who brought them to Greater Manchester (GM), while also bringing communities together. As well as public performances, we will document the histories, traditional uses and music of these instruments, ensuring this heritage is accessible and valued for future generations. We aim to foster cross-cultural understanding, challenge stereotypes, and increase belonging by showcasing the cultural contributions of GM’s migrant communities. By partnering with heritage institutions, and involving local schools, we will engage diverse audiences in learning about at-risk traditions. The project will also provide professional opportunities for musicians from these different communities. Our legacy will be a rich, accessible archive of music, stories, and knowledge that keeps this heritage alive. Increasing public engagement, and strengthening heritage networks, we will ensure long-term impact, inspiring future generations to celebrate and sustain diverse cultural histories.
