Culture And Memory
Through focusing on historic experiences of childhood in Sparkhill, the project will engage local children and families with the heritage of this super diverse neighbourhood in Birmingham. Whilst exploring Sparkhill through the lens of growing up in the neighbourhood, the project will document and celebrate the full breadth of its cultural heritage and its people, encourage community cohesion and inspire a sense of pride in Sparkhill amongst its youngest residents and the wider community. This project has evolved directly out of the consultation undertaken during Y1 of our Child Friendly Neighbourhood strategy and will contribute to the delivery of this strategy in Y2-3. Our experience tells us that creative workshops that reflect families’ heritage increases self-esteem, self-efficacy and confidence. This project will develop and deliver a year-long programme of community heritage research and activities culminating in a heritage focused Festival of Sparkhill in 2025.
