Stars and their Consolations / Sêr a'u Cysuron

This project focuses on the heritage of oral storytelling, specifically stories of the constellations, their place in folklore, myth, in landscape and seasonal traditions and their capacity to support resilience. These stories are in danger of being lost, through a combination of factors including: 1) light pollution, making it physically difficult to view stars 2) low levels of transmission, of stories and the oral storytelling skills which sustain them 3) Low knowledge of specific Welsh myths and legends 4) Lack of capacity to tell better known Greek myths of stars (e.g. Orion) in Welsh language This project will: 1) train 10 x bilingual and Welsh language storytellers to tell & document Night Sky stories 2) provide opportunities for young people and mixed communities to learn and retell them 3) preserve stories for future generations in Casgliad y Werin Cymru/People’s Collection Wales 4) improve sustainability, by passing on storytelling skills
