Nature And Landscape

Sustaining soils

This project will help four inner city schools understand their school ground's soil and work with them to find appropriate ways to mitigate against soil contamination and/or to improve impoverished soils. We would like whole-school communities to explore and understand the historical reasons for the state of their school's soil. Where necessary the project will provide soil testing to ensure that children's health is safeguarded. By delivering workshops with groups of children interested in environmental matters (eco teams) they would learn about the importance of having access to healthy soils and come to understand the state of their school's soil. Each team will create a soil action plan appropriate to their setting and be empowered to work on projects to improve soil health in their school. With this learning and experience the teams will then be supported to become community educators on soil health in the local and wider community.
