Culture And Memory

Synth City – Celebrating the Legacy of The Limit

'Synth City – Celebrating the Legacy of The Limit' aims to preserve and promote the story of one of Sheffield’s most influential underground music venues. Opening in 1978, The Limit became the launchpad for the city’s pioneering electropop scene, nurturing acts like The Human League, Vice Versa (became ABC), Clock DVA, Cabaret Voltaire, Heaven 17 and others. With its 50th anniversary approaching in 2028, our project will collect and share the memories, music and cultural impact of this iconic space. Through oral histories, exhibitions, podcasts, a new book, and a documentary film, we’ll create a living archive that reintroduces this vital chapter of Sheffield’s story to new audiences. The project will train volunteers, celebrate local creativity, and ensure that The Limit’s legacy is not lost to time. Led by the newly formed Synth City, we will honour the past while building skills and pride for the future.
