Thames Catchment Community Eels Project (TCCEP)

This project will restore populations of critically endangered European eel, reconnect river habitats, and engage communities across six Thames catchments. It builds on the success of the earlier Green Recovery Challenge Fund project, scaling delivery and legacy across conservation, education, and inclusion. Led by Thames Rivers Trust and delivered in partnership with seven organisations, and supported by the Environment Agency, the project aims to: 1. Restore eel migration routes by removing barriers, improving priority habitats, reconnecting pathways, and enabling access to vital freshwater ecosystems. 2. Connect communities with eel and river heritage through inclusive, co-created activities that foster pride, identity, and stronger ties to local rivers. 3. Build capacity and skills among volunteers, delivery partners, and TRT to support long-term environmental stewardship. 4. Embed environmental sustainability and climate resilience into all activities. Capital works will use low-impact, future-ready approaches aligned with the Environmental Improvement Plan and Local Nature Recovery Strategies.
